Ben Gazzara 1930-2012

One of my favourite actors has passed away at the age of 81. Ben Gazzara made waves in four of John Cassavetes films, and was still working into his early 80s.

The last time I saw him in a new film was 2006′s Paris Je T’aime, an anthology film. Gazzara’s story teamed him with fellow Cassavetes player, Gena Rowlands. It was bittersweet seeing them together again, and their advanced years underscored the drama very poignantly.

Before that, he had a role in Dogville, not too long before that he was in Happiness and The Big Lebowski, and winding backwards we’d eventually get to Tales of Ordinary Madness, in which he played Charles Bukowksi, and then the 1970s and a whole raft of exciting pictures: Saint Jack, Opening Night, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

It’s likely that last role which I will always associate most closely with him.

Gyliano van Velzen scored twice as Manchester United romped to a 5-1 win over Swansea in The FA Youth Cup Fifth Round on Thursday night.

The Dutch U17 international scored either side of half-time and was joined on the scoresheet by Jack Barmby, Sam Byrne and Tyler Blackett.

Most of the damage was done in the first half as the reigning champions led 3-0 at the interval at the Liberty Stadium.

Barmby provided the crucial breakthrough in the 38th minute when he slotted the ball past an onrushing Oliver Davies from Nicolas Ioannou's pass.

And the lead was doubled just two minutes later when Mats Daelhi unselfishly squared the ball to Van Velzen who made no mistake with an easy tap-in.

And there was still time for Irish striker Byrne to slide the ball past Davies and into the back of the net in first-half injury time after neat build up play between Barmby and Van Velzen.

Van Velzen then grabbed his second four minutes after the break to put the tie beyond doubt. But a defensive mix-up and a loose header by captain Blackett allowed James Loveridge to pull one back for the home side.

But Blackett made amends and sealed United's emphatic victory with a beautiful free kick in the dying moments of the game.

United advance to the quarter final stage where they have a home tie against the winners of the Charlton and Tottenham tie on a fortnight.

Lauren Gray and her huge voice joined three heartland guys -- Reis Kloeckener, Johnny Keyser and Ethan Jones -- as the standouts as "American Idol" sent 46 contestants from St. Louis to Hollywood.

1) Apple-cheeked Reis Kloeckener sang "Lean on Me" so well he got Steve Tyler to say "that was so beautiful you made me cry." He's gotta be one of the favorites already.
2) Johnny Keyser's good looks and sweet voice on "A Change is Gonna Come" got Jennifer Lopez excited and asking, "you know you're going to be a star, right?!"
3) Lauren Gray's version of "One and Only" blew the judges away as they praised her fearlessness in going for the high note. "You're one of the best female voice we've heard," Jennifer Lopez said simply.
4) Fresh-faced Ethan Jones, whose dad is in rehab, sang straight from the heart on "I'll Be," prompting Randy Jackson to say, "I like the whole unassuming thing."
5) Divorcing Rachelle Lamb, who says her husband "held me back," showed off a big voice on "Find Somebody New" -- but for me it was no different than dozens of other country singers.

SOUL TRAIN FOUNDER DON CORNELIUS DEAD OF GUNSHOT WOUND

Don Cornelius -- who famously created "Soul Train" was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, CA home this morning ... and law enforcement sources tell us it appears he committed suicide.

We're told cops discovered the body at around 4 AM PT. Law enforcement sources tell us ... Cornelius died from a gunshot wound to the head and officials believe the wound was self-inflicted.

We're told Cornelius was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"Soul Train" changed the landscape of television when it debuted in 1971 and ran until 2006.

Officials have notified Don's family.

Cornelius was 75.

During Don's bitter divorce proceedings in 2009, he told an L.A. judge he was suffering from "significant health issues" and wanted to "finalize this divorce before I die."

Cornelius was arrested in 2008 for beating up his wife. He pled no contest to misdemeanor domestic violence and was placed on 3 years probation. His probation just terminated.

The divorce was granted in 2010.

Sources close to Don tell us ... the TV icon was plagued with health issues for years ... including a stroke and a condition that required brain surgery.

Egypt: Soccer Riot Leaves Scores Dead In Port Said

Seventy-three people were killed and at least 1,000 injured on Wednesday after a soccer pitch invasion in the Egyptian city of Port Said, in what a deputy minister called the biggest disaster in the nation's soccer history.

Violence at football matches across north Africa has increased significantly since political unrest began sweeping the region more than a year ago, and one player described Wednesday's riot as "a war, not football".

Angry politicians and sports officials decried a lack of security at the match between Port Said team al-Masry and Al Ahli, one of Egypt's most successful clubs, and blamed the nation's leaders for allowing - or even causing - the tragedy.

Wednesday's trouble flared at the end of a match when al-Masry beat Al Ahli 3-1.

"This is unfortunate and deeply saddening. It is the biggest disaster in Egypt's soccer history," Deputy Health Minister Hesham Sheiha told state television.

Witnesses said trouble broke out when Ahli fans unfurled banners insulting Port Said and an Ahli supporter descended onto the pitch carrying an iron bar. Al-Masry fans reacted by pouring onto the pitch and attacking Ahli players. They then turned to the terraces to attack Ahli supporters.

Most of the deaths were among people who were trampled in the crush of the panicking crowd or who fell from terraces, witnesses said.

Live television coverage showed fans running onto the field and chasing Ahli players. A small group of riot police formed a corridor to try to protect the players, but they appeared overwhelmed and fans were still able to kick and punch the players as they fled.

HELICOPTERS TRANSFER INJURED

"This is not football. This is a war and people are dying in front of us. There is no movement and no security and no ambulances," Ahli player Mohamed Abo Treika told his club's television channel.

"I call for the premier league to be cancelled. This is horrible situation and today can never be forgotten."

State television reported that Egypt's football federation had indefinitely suspended premier league matches.

Egypt's Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, the head of the country's ruling military council, ordered two helicopters be sent to Port Said, the scene of violent soccer clashes, to fly out some of the visiting Al Ahli soccer team and its fans, military sources said.

The helicopters would transfer the injured to military hospitals, the sources said.

Albadry Farghali, a member of parliament for Port Said, accused officials and security forces of allowing the disaster, saying they still had ties to the government of President Hosni Mubarak, who was overthrown a year ago.

"The security forces did this or allowed it to happen. The men of Mubarak are still ruling. The head of the regime has fallen but all his men are still in their positions," he screamed in a telephone call to live television.

"Where is the security? Where is the government?"

A number of policemen were among the dead, a medical source and witnesses said.

Hospitals throughout the Suez Canal zone were put on a state of emergency, and dozens of ambulances rushed to Port Said from the Canal cities of Ismailia and Suez, said an official in the zone's local ambulance service.

Another match in Cairo was halted by the referee after receiving news of the violence in Port Said, prompting fans to set parts of the stadium on fire, television footage showed. Obama used Tuesday's State of the Union address to lay out a vision of America in which everybody gets a fair shot at economic success and everybody -- including "the wealthy" -- plays by the same rules as the average citizen.

Obama's address, which comes in the midst of a rapidly escalating presidential campaign season, delivered a strong message about the need for social and economic equality and put forward a handful of new policy ideas targeting tax reform, college affordability and clean energy. But by and large, Obama's third State of the Union was focused on proposals for boosting the economy and ensuring protections for the middle class.

All-Star forward Kevin Love hit a game-winning, buzzer-beating 3-pointer to push the Minnesota Timberwolves past the Los Angeles Clippers, 101-98, at the Staples Center on Friday night.

Love's 3-pointer came on a side out of bounds play after Clippers guard Chauncey Billups missed a lay-up with just seconds to go and the Timberwolves called timeout. Love came open, caught the inbounds pass from Luke Ridnour at the top of the circle and let fly from well behind the 3-point line. He hit nothing but net, sending the Timberwolves bench into hysterics.

Love's winner came after Timberwolves rookie guard Ricky Rubio hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left to tie the game at 98. It was Rubio's first made field goal of the evening, and he finished 1-for-11 with 9 points, 6 assists, and 3 rebounds.

Love finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal in 36 minutes. Clippers All-Star forward Blake Griffin finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal in 38 minutes.

Though pop star Beyoncé rendered the tune at the celebration, she was channeling James, the R&B and blues icon whose 50-year career was marked by powerful tunes and an often tumultuous personal life. She died Friday at age 73 in California from leukemia, having influenced dozens of singers, including Beyoncé— who portrayed her in the 2008 film Cadillac Records— Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Shemekia Copeland and Janis Joplin.

James had been out of the spotlight since January 2010 when she was hospitalized with MRSA, a bacterial infection resistant to many antibiotics. She had been seeking treatment to end a dependency to painkillers and other over-the-counter medications. Donto James, her son, said at the time that his mother had been battling Alzheimer's disease since 2009. Most recently, she was being treated for chronic leukemia.

The singer was as renowned for her sharp tongue as her lusty belting. Not long after the inauguration, she let it be known she was miffed at both the singer and the president for being passed over to sing the 1942 Glenn Miller pop hit that she turned into an R&B classic in 1961. (She subsequently insisted that she was joking.) She got her chance to sing At Last for a national television audience a few months later as a guest on ABC's Dancing With the Stars.

The fiery singer known for such hits as I'd Rather Go Blind and Tell Mama had grown increasingly more popular in recent years with her unbridled performances and a dozen standout albums, including 2006's All the Way. The three-time Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was beloved for her raw passion, ribald humor and brutal honesty.

When Rolling Stone magazine in 2004 placed her among its 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, Bonnie Raitt wrote, "Etta has clearly influenced people like Janis Joplin and me, and now people like Susan Tedeschi and Joss Stone. Anybody who has a bluesy side to what they do can point to Etta James as the bridge between R&B, blues and pop singing. You can't overestimate her influence."

James was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles to unwed 14-year-old Dorothy Hawkins, who never officially revealed the father. James claimed that her father was famed pool hustler Rudolph "Minnesota Fats" Walderone.

James — a gospel prodigy who sang and was heard on local radio with the St. Paul Baptist Church choir in Los Angeles when she was 5 — was discovered at 14 by Johnny Otis. The famed R&B bandleader flipped her first name to create her stage moniker. Her first recording —Roll With Me Henry with The Peaches (also Etta's nickname) — was an answer to Hank Ballard's Work With Me Annie. But the song, which was made over her mother's objections, was considered too racy for radio and its title was changed to The Wallflower. It topped the R&B charts in 1955 and was later covered by white singer Georgia Gibbs, who had a No. 1 pop hit with it as Dance With Me Henry.

James also scored that year with Good Rockin' Daddy and began touring with the likes of Little Richard and Bo Diddley. But her next hit didn't come until 1960, when she signed with the Chess Records subsidiary Argo.

There she did two duets with then-boyfriend and Moonglows' lead singer Harvey Fuqua and had an eight-year string of top 10 R&B hits, including Something's Got a Hold on Me, Stop the Wedding, Trust in Me, Don't Cry, Baby as well as her signature tunes Tell Mama and At Last. Other standouts during that time were the ballad I'd Rather Go Blind and her bluesy duet with Sugar Pie DeSanto, In the Basement.

James spent the next two decades battling a heroin addiction and personal problems, but she continued to tour and record sporadically. By the late '80s, the resilient singer had kicked her habit and the release of The Seven Year Itch signaled her resurgence. Her years of struggle were rewarded in 1993 when she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the following year she won the W.C. Handy Award for best female vocalist. Starting with 1994's Grammy-winning Mystery Lady: The Songs of Billie Holiday, she maintained an eclectic but steady stream of album releases that found her exploring country, jazz, blues and R&B.

James, who titled her 1997 album Love's Been Rough on Me, certainly spoke from experience. She had a series of abusive lovers in her early years. But as the title of her 1995 autobiography with David Ritz proclaimed, she had a Rage to Survive, despite a turbulent love life, poverty and jail time for stealing prescription drugs and writing bad checks.

For a time, her weight ballooned to 400 pounds and she needed a motorized wheelchair to get around. Bad knees forced her to sit when she performed. But weight reduction surgery in 2003 shaved 200 pounds from her frame and granted her new mobility.

James, who had been married to Artis Mills since 1969, made her later career a family affair. Her sons, drummer Donto and bassist Sametto, played with her in concert and produced her music in the studio. Her 2001 jazz standards album, Blue Gardenia, honored her mother, who offered a poignant solo on the title track.

US President Barack Obama sent a New York crowd wild when he broke into song at a fundraising event at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem.

The 1400-strong audience clapped and cheered when he belted out a line from Al Green's hit song Let's Stay Together.

The soul legend was actually there, but it was the commander-in-chief's singing skills which brought the house down.

Obama was reiterating his pitch for 2012 re-election, and touted his administration's record on issues, including healthcare, job creation and the end of the Iraq war.

"It shouldn't make you satisfied, because everything we did over the last three years is now at stake in this election," he said.

"America is not going to win if we do the same things, if we respond to our economic challenges with the same old, tired 'cut taxes for wealthy people; let companies do whatever they want even if it's harming other folks, and somehow prosperity is going to trickle down to everybody else."

US Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich has angrily denied a report that he once wanted an "open marriage", strongly criticising the US media at the start of a key debate.

Mr Gingrich told CNN's debate host that even raising the issue was "as close to despicable as anything I can imagine".

He called the US media "destructive, vicious and negative".

The four remaining candidates appeared in a last-ditch debate before Saturday's South Carolina primary.

Mr Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Ron Paul and Rick Santorum debated in Charleston after a dramatic day.

As Mr Gingrich gained on Mr Romney in the polls, an ex-wife revealed in an interview he wanted an "open marriage".

Meanwhile, Texas Governor Rick Perry pulled out of the race and Iowa said a vote mix-up meant Mr Romney had not won its caucuses.

Mr Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, is the front-runner in the state-by-state race for the Republican Party's nomination to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama for the White House this November.

He is ahead of Mr Gingrich, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, Christian conservative former Senator Rick Santorum and Texas Congressman Ron Paul.
'Grandiose thoughts'

After Mr Gingrich's blistering opening, Mitt Romney's caution on the issue of his tax returns provided the most revealing moment.

Asked if he would follow his father's example and release 12 years of returns, Mr Romney - who is worth an estimated $200m (£130m) - said he would release "multiple years", but hesitated in his answer and drew jeers from the crowd.

"I'm not going to apologise for doing well," he said. "What I have, I earned."

Mr Gingrich, by contrast, was able to announce that his campaign had released his tax returns shortly before the debate began.

The candidates also clashed over healthcare and President Barack Obama's controversial reform law.

Mr Santorum said he doubted Mr Romney and Mr Gingrich would keep their promises to repeal the law, citing their previous support for similar legislation.

The former Pennsylvania senator said he had never supported the individual mandate, while Mr Gingrich and Mr Romney "played footsie with the left" on healthcare.

At the end of a day full of twists and turns, it was perhaps inevitable that one of those twists would explode at the latest Republican debate, here in South Carolina. Newt Gingrich thundered with anger when the debate moderator asked about his second wife's allegation that Mr Gingrich once asked her to tolerate an open marriage, so he could maintain an affair with the woman who went on to become his third wife.

His rivals all diplomatically avoided the issue, conscious that the media is doing their work for them. Newt Gingrich has been enjoying a late surge in the polls here and seems to believe he can defeat the current Republican front runner, Mitt Romney.

But in a state with large numbers of socially conservative evangelical voters, stories about a candidate's troubled private life can have an effect. The debate had other lively moments, as the candidates all tried to score some last-minute points, in front of a noisy audience. Polls open on Saturday morning. If Mitt Romney wins here, his eventual nomination will look more certain than ever.

Mr Santorum - who adopted a combative tone throughout the debate - also questioned Mr Gingrich's time as House speaker, a time when he was a close associate of his rival.

"Sometimes you have these worrisome moments," he said, warning that Mr Gingrich could "pop off" at any time, in an echo of Mr Romney's earlier attacks that he was "unreliable".

Mr Gingrich was unapologetic, casting himself as a "rebel" during his congressional days, and arguing that he helped Republicans win a majority in the 1990s.

"You're right. I think grandiose thoughts." Mr Gingrich said. "This is a grandiose country"
Perry bows out

Mr Gingrich took the debate stage hours before ABC News broadcast the full details of an interview with his second wife, Marianne.

Despite poll numbers showing him gaining on Mr Romney, the long-time front-runner, his pitch to South Carolina's largely conservative and Christian electorate looked to be under threat by her testimony.

In an excerpt of her remarks on ABC News' Nightline programme, the former Mrs Gingrich says her ex-husband wanted her to share him with Callista Bisek, the woman who would become his third wife.

"He was asking to have an open marriage and I refused," she said.

A dramatic day on the campaign trail began with the news that Texas Governor Rick Perry had decided to quit - and endorse Mr Gingrich.

Rick Perry: "I know when it's time to make a strategic retreat"

When Mr Perry entered the race in August, he briefly shot to the front of the pack before gaffes and poor debate performances set him back.

The Texas governor told supporters in South Carolina on Thursday: "I've come to the conclusion that there is no viable path forward for me in this 2012 campaign.

"Therefore today I am suspending my campaign and endorsing Newt Gingrich."

He called Mr Gingrich "a conservative visionary who can transform our country", adding: "Newt is not perfect, but who among us is?"

His departure follows on the heels of former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and last month, Georgia businessman Herman Cain.

Mr Perry had faced calls in recent days to stand aside as rivals warned the conservative vote would fracture across the candidates, ultimately benefiting Mr Romney.

Thursday also saw the final results of the Iowa caucuses certified as a split decision between Mr Romney and Mr Santorum because of missing data.

Mr Romney had initially been declared the winner of the 3 January nominating contest, by a mere eight votes.

But the final count shows Mr Santorum ahead by 34 votes. No winner has been declared because the results from eight precincts are missing.

Olympic freestyle skier Sarah Burke, a four-time Winter X Games champion Dead at 29

Canadian freeskier Sarah Burke died Thursday, nine days after crashing at the bottom of the superpipe during a training run in Utah.
Burke, who lived near Whistler in British Columbia, was 29. She was injured Jan. 11 while training at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort.
Canada's Sarah Burke, a pioneer in women's freeskiing, died Thursday from crash-related injuries.
Tests revealed Burke sustained "irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest," according to a statement released by Burke's publicist.
A four-time Winter X Games champion, Burke crashed on the same halfpipe where snowboarder Kevin Pearce suffered a traumatic brain injury during a training accident Dec. 31, 2009.
Burke was the best-known athlete in her sport and will be remembered for the legacy she left for women in freeskiing.
As a result of her fall, Burke tore her vertebral artery, which led to severe bleeding on the brain, causing her to go into cardiac arrest on the scene, where CPR was performed, according to the statement by publicist Nicole Wool.

We tried a few titles, ranging from steady textbooks to more exotic stuffs, but by far the best is the selection from E.O. Wilson called Life on Earth. Apple iBooks 2 demo in NYC - 01.19.2012

To launch one of these textbooks you simply go into iBooks like normal, select the title you want with a tap and then wait a few moments. These big textbooks are a bit sluggish to load, but then again many of them have FMV intros -- just like the CD-ROM games of the '90s. Thankfully you can skip past that and get to the meat of the books. And there is a lot of meat. Life on Earth clocks in at 965MB, and that's just two chapters. Pearson's Biology is 2.7GB!

Interacting with the books is a generally intuitive combination of tapping, swiping and pinching. You can pinch from any page to get out to the heading of that chapter, then drag along a bar on the bottom to quickly go from one chapter to the next. When you're looking at any page, you can get a closer view of any of the media there by simply pinching it. Tiny picture of an ant? Give it a nudge and it's full-screen. You can then swipe through galleries, play movies and interact with various other widgets that authors can drop in place.

The view is awfully flashy and fun and, we must say, a little bit distracting. Maybe that's just because we're used to boring old textbooks, though. If you do want a more streamlined view, just tilt the iPad into portrait view. Here the images and media take a back seat to the text.

Taking notes is as easy as long-tapping on any word and then dragging your finger across. The highlight is created and you can then type additional notes on top of that. Once that's done, you can aggregate all your notes together and make flashcards, even have definitions on one side and key terms on the other. We do wonder if the process of writing the 3 x 5-inch cards wasn't part of the learning, but this genuinely makes learning more fun, and that's something.

Still, those are minor questions compared to what is a pretty amazing demonstration. These books aren't hugely better than interactive books we've seen before, but they are going to be free to create and may will sell for just $14.99. Major publishers Pearson, McGraw Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt are already playing along, releasing textbooks that are used in millions of schools worldwide. It's an impressive launch and, if Apple has anything to say about it, this is only the beginning.

Bruins Fan Rough Up Lightning Mascot Thunderbug After Silly Stringing (Video)

The mascot for the Tampa Bay Lightning is named ThunderBug. Among his hobbies listed on the Lightning's website are "Playing Pranks on Southeast Division NHL Teams, & Lighting Up Someone's Day."

It seems that ThunderBug may have gotten those two pastimes confused when he attempted to light up the day of a fan by playing a prank. Fortunately, the fan took the prank in stride and laughed off the exchange.

Or not. The fan attacked the mascot and was escorted out of the arena.

ThunderBug got a bigger rise than he anticipated on Tuesday night when he snuck up on a fan rooting for the visiting Bruins and began spraying him with silly string. The fan's immediate reaction was to chase after the mascot and shove him, which, not surprisingly, resulted in him being kicked out of the arena.

We imagine the man was less than pleased while listening to his Bruins fall to the Lightning 5-3 from outside the confines of the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

A sickening video showing a group of masked teens ruthlessly beating a 17-year-old boy in Chicago’s South Side has gone viral. Cops detained six teens for questioning on Tuesday.

Six Chicago teens are in police custody on Tuesday after a video showing a gang of gutless thugs beating and robbing a 17-year-old boy went viral.

Windy City police told the Chicago Tribune that the beating happened in a snowy alley Sunday at around 4:00 p.m. in the working-class Bridgeport neighborhood, on the city's South Side.

The six teens manically laugh as they mercilessly pummel and stomp the defenseless boy's head while heckling the teen - who is Asian - with racial taunts.

"A random little kid. F--- his a-- up," one of the punks sneers, as another pounds the victim in the head with a Nike sneaker swiped from his own backpack.

At one point, the ringleader of the mob, dressed in a gray sweatshirt and black ski mask, stands the boy up and threatens to kill him.

"Am I speaking Chinese to you, n-----?" the ringleader screams.

Another boy - the only unmasked one -- demands the victim's backpack.

When he refuses, the mob resumes the attack, tearing at his clothes and jacket, punching him in the face and slamming him on the ground.

Blood pours from the boy's nose and mouth as he begs to be let go.

Finally, after nearly four minutes, the boy manages to break free and runs away.

The video ends with his attackers pursuing him down the alley.

Footage of the gang beating sparked outrage on YouTube.

"Hope these roaches got caught," one commenter wrote.

Six teens were brought in for questioning in connection with the attack on Tuesday, but no charges have been filed, the Tribune reported.

Cops don't believe the attack was racially motivated.

Along with the shoes, the gang took the boy's wallet and $180 in cash.

The boy was treated at Mercy Hospital and Medical Center for a split lip, bruises and cuts and later released, cops said.

Jan 17, 2012 - With six seconds remaining and the scored tied, about 20,000 people in Staples Center and a few million more watching on TV knew exactly where the ball was going. Jason Terry of the Dallas Mavericks had just tied the game at 70, and the L.A. Lakers would inbound the ball to Kobe Bryant, and Bryant would try to win the game. So when Bryant received the inbounds pass, Terry immediately rushed to double-team him 35 feet from the basket. Then Kobe did something remarkable -- he passed the ball. As Terry came to double, Kobe hit a wide open Derek Fisher, Terry's man, and Fisher, who has made a couple big shots in his career, calmly drained a long three-pointer to win the game. It was the smart play, it was the simple play, it was the right play, and because of it the Lakers escaped with a 73-70 victory.

Bryant had been on a roll lately, scoring 40 or more points in four consecutive games. That streak came to an end Monday night as he was held to a season-low 14 on just 7 for 22 shooting. Invariably Bryant is determined to take that final shot himself -- whether it was the cold shooting night or something else, he gave up the ball this time, and it was the right decision. It helps that it was Fisher on the receiving end, probably the Laker that Bryant trusts the most.

This was not a pretty game. Both teams shot in the 30s (the Lakers finished at 38 percent, the Mavs just 35 percent). The Lakers lost their halftime lead in a dismal third quarter during which they shot 3 for 19 and were outscored 16 to 7. Dallas was at least more consistent, but during no quarter did they score as many as 20 points. A 17-4 fourth quarter run had regained the lead for L.A. before Dallas clawed back to even on Terry's runner, setting up Fisher's heroics.

Dirk Nowitzki led Dallas with 21 points, but former Laker Lamar Odom was the only other Mav in double figures, at just 10. Andrew Bynum led the Lakers in scoring with 17 points along with 15 rebounds. It was the lowest point total of the season for the Mavericks -- and for the Lakers -- but the defenses deserve a lot of credit for the low-scoring evening.

For Bryant it was the rare game where he couldn't get his game going. He started off missing his first five shots, but then hit four straight before the intermission and it seemed like he might be primed for a big second half. Instead, he missed all six of his third quarter attempts as the entire Lakers offense struggled.

For Mike Brown and the Lakers, getting a win without having to rely on Kobe to score 40 is a major step forward. In the end, solid team defense and more even shot distribution is a more sustainable solution. There will no doubt be nights when they'll need Kobe to put on a scoring exhibition -- but it's also nice to know that he can also make the pass to an open Fisher when the time comes.

This was L.A.'s ninth straight home win, and with it they improve to 10-5 overall. The Mavericks drop to 8-6.

As many Americans know, the King commemoration is an unusual holiday in a number of respects. It’s one of only three federally authorized celebrations of individuals, the others being Washington’s Birthday and Columbus Day. It’s the newest US holiday, created in 1983. It’s been bolstered for 2012 by the opening of the new King memorial on the National Mall in Washington.

But here’s something many citizens may not know: It is really two holidays in one.

There’s the overall King Day, set in ’83 when President Reagan signed a bill putting it in federal law. And there’s the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, established when President Clinton signed the King Holiday and Service Act of 1994. King Service Day is meant to be a day of personal action in Dr. King’s memory on or near his holiday – as its boosters say, a day on, not a day off. It’s promoted by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that also runs AmeriCorps and similar initiatives.

Last year in Philadelphia, for instance, computer professionals got together to donate used PCs to city families who lacked Internet access. In Washington, President Obama and his kids helped paint a middle school. In Des Moines, Iowa, members of Habitat for Humanity built 25 sheds for needy homeowners.

Many cities have organized King Service Day efforts. Philadelphia may be the most notable example: This year organizers expect to attract 85,000 volunteers to some 1,300 projects.

But if your city isn’t doing that, or if you don’t live in a city, you can go to the official King Service Day website (mlkday.gov), enter your Zip Code, and find projects that are asking for volunteers.

Or organize your own. Plant trees in your neighborhood. Organize a book drive. Write letters to troops (the King website has tips on what to say and where to send them).

As King himself said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ”

Internet phenomenon Lana Del Rey had her U.S. television debut on SNL Saturday night. Del Rey has thus far remained largely within the confines of the internet -- she first gained international attention with her song, "Video Games," and followed up with a series of internet releases in rapid succession, all of which will be featured on her forthcoming album, Born To Die. According to Stereogum, she's the first artist to perform on SNL before the release of a major label album since Natalia Imbruglia.

Her performance Saturday night was under high scrutiny by those who are familiar with her internet videos, and her American debut for those who've never heard her name. For these reasons, it possibly couldn't have gone worse. Del Rey, who had expressed her nervousness before the show, was pitchy and strangely guttural in her renditions of "Video Games" and "Blue Jeans." Those who have only heard Del Rey online wondered whether she just isn't meant for the stage. Those who hadn't wondered how she slipped through the cracks and onto SNL. According to the Hollywood Reporter, actress Juliette Lewis tweeted, "Wow watching this 'singer' on SNL is like watching a 12 yearold in their bedroom when they're pretending to sing and perform. #signofourtimes." The tweet has since been removed from Lewis' account. The rest of the Twitterverse shared similar reactions, calling the performance "cringeworthy" and a "snoozefest." Perez Hilton warned that we "#DontBuyTheHype." Others were kinder -- one tweeter said "it was better than Ashlee Simpsons' disaster."

Still, we wonder how little this has to do with talent, and how much with nerves. After all, we've seen her perform for a television audience outside the U.S. Her rendition of "Video Games" on Jools Holland, for one, was decent, and far from deserving this sort of criticism. Is this just be a case of being pushed into the spotlight too fast, with too much pressure for perfection? Or has Del Rey's starpower faded before she's even put out her first album? The preliminary competition in the Miss America 2012 pageant have taken place with awards and scholarships awarded to several contestants from across the country.

An opera-singing Miss Wisconsin, Laura Kaeppeler, topped the first round of the Miss America talent competition. The talent portion is 35 percent of a contestant’s preliminary score.

A swimsuit-clad Miss Utah, Danica Olsen, scored honors in the lifestyle and fitness category. The fitness category is 15 percent of a contestant’s score.

But the biggest winner of all - Miss America 2012 - will be revealed Saturday night when she is crowned at a ceremony at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas. The pageant will be broadcast by ABC at 9 p.m. and seen locally on WGGB-TV, abc40

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl cornerback Carlos Rogers doesn’t care about style points and reputations.

Heading into the NFC divisional playoff game Saturday, the New Orleans Saints boasted the league’s top offense and featured a record-breaking quarterback in Drew Brees.

“We got confidence in our players and our scheme and our team,” Rogers said. “We’re going to get up and challenge guys. They’re going to make plays, but they’re going to make them with us in their face.

“We’re not going to let them run free throughout our defense. We’re going to challenge them, and that’s what we did. We feel we can stop anyone.”

So if the Super Bowl-champion Green Bay Packers win Sunday, the 49ers won’t be intimidated to play at Lambeau Field. In a stirring 36-32 victory against the Saints at Candlestick Park, the 49ers highlighted a host of attributes befitting of a championship contender.

One from a bygone era.

They pounded the ground (143 rushing yards).

They generated turnovers (five takeaways).

And they displayed resilience (two clutch drives).

“That’s what we’ve been doing all year,” said running back Frank Gore, who had 89 rushing yards, including a 42-yarder in the fourth quarter. “As long as we play our brand of football, we can do anything we want.”

The Saints were the hottest team entering the weekend, their last loss coming in October. In the nine games since, Brees has posted dizzying statistics, thanks, in part, to taking just seven sacks.

While he completed 40 of 63 passes for 462 yards, Brees was intercepted twice, sacked three times and pressured 11 other instances.

“Obviously, they have a great defense; we knew that coming in,” said Saints tight end Jimmy Graham, who had two touchdown catches and 103 receiving yards. “We knew if push came to shove, if Drew had the ball in his hands at the end, we would score and we did.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t stop them.”

That’s why the remaining playoff teams will take notice.

Alex Smith, once labeled a bust, played like an elite quarterback late in the game.

His 28-yard touchdown on a naked bootleg was a brilliant call on third-and-eight, but Smith couldn’t have been much more perfect when he took over on the final drive with 1:37 left and his team trailing 32-29. He completed 5 of 6 attempts for 85 yards, including a 47-yarder to Vernon Davis and a 14-yard touchdown on a post pass to the tight end to win the game.

“We have all the confidence in the world in [Smith], and it showed today,” receiver Kyle Williams said. “For everybody else who wants to dog him, the proof is in the pudding.”

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 earthquake hit off the shores of Japan's southern Pacific island.
The Meteorological Agency says the offshore quake Sunday struck about 230 miles below the sea surface.
The agency said there was no danger of a tsunami.

Japan, which lies along the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' is one of the world's most seismically active countries.

Blagojevich's wife, daughter plead for leniency

CHICAGO — After all his claims of innocence and facing years in prison, Rod Blagojevich let his lawyers make an admission that he has so far avoided – that he is, in fact, guilty of public corruption.

The former Illinois governor will get a chance to do the same Wednesday, when he is scheduled to address the judge who will decide his sentence.

Judge James Zagel signaled Tuesday he may be prepared to impose a stiff prison sentence, saying he thinks Blagojevich lied when he told jurors he never tried to sell or trade an appointment to President Barack Obama's vacated Senate seat for campaign cash or a top job.

Throughout the first day of his two-day sentencing hearing, the impeached executive-turned-reality TV star known for his jocular personality was somber and ill-at-ease, staring down at the floor. His wife sobbed as a letter from their daughter was read begging Zagel not to send Blagojevich to prison.

The hearing was a stark contrast to the circus atmosphere around Blagojevich's trials on multiple counts of corruption.

The conciliatory tone came as something of a surprise – just days after defense filings that, as many times before, stridently declared Blagojevich's innocence and said he had been duped by aides but never intended to cross any lines into illegality.

Attorney Sheldon Sorosky told Zagel it was illegal for Blagojevich to ask for a job for himself in exchange for naming Obama's replacement in the Senate.

"There's no doubt this is a crime to do this in relation to the Senate seat, we accept that," he said. "I am just saying that does not call for a 15- to 20-year jail" term as prosecutors have requested.

Sorosky made the same argument when he talked about the other crimes for which Blagojevich was convicted: shaking down a racetrack executive and a hospital executive, as well as lying to the FBI.

At Tuesday's hearing, Blagojevich ringed his hands and pulled nervously at his fingers, pausing occasionally to sip on a plastic bottle of Cherry Coke. Legal experts believe Blagojevich needs to express remorse for his actions when addressing the judge Wednesday.

Zagel, who has said he'll pronounce a sentence Wednesday, said early on during Tuesday's hearing that Blagojevich was clearly the ringleader of the schemes for which he was convicted and that he lied about his actions on the witness stand. The judge made it clear he did not believe a suggestion made by defense attorneys that Blagojevich was duped by aides and advisers.

"There is no question from his tone of voice that he was demanding," Zagel said of Blagojevich's comments on phone conversations secretly recorded by the FBI. "His role as leader is clearly shown by his actions."

And in a harsh assessment of Blagojevich's performance on the witness stand, Zagel said the former governor was lying when he testified that he planned to appoint the state's attorney general to Obama's seat in a political deal that is legal.

"I think this is untrue," Zagel said. "I thought it was untrue when he said it and I think it is still untrue."

Defense attorney Aaron Goldstein pleaded with the judge not to impose a lengthy prison sentence – not for Blagojevich's sake, but for that of his family. In an emotional few minutes before proceedings ended for the day, Goldstein said locking Blagojevich up for a long time would devastate his wife and two daughters.

When Goldstein began reading a letter to the judge from Blagojevich's older daughter, 15-year-old Amy, the former governor suddenly seemed to fight to maintain his composure, fidgeting with a pen, biting on his lip. An attorney turned to gently pat his shoulder.

Amy wrote that she needs her father for all the things that will happen in her life – graduation from high school, applying to college and when her heart gets broken. In another letter, Blagojevich's wife, Patti, asked Zagel to "please be merciful" and said the punishment her husband fears the most is not seeing his daughters grow up.

Zagel seemed engaged in what Goldstein was saying as he described Blagojevich as a father. Patti Blagojevich began sobbing, tears streaming down her cheeks, then dabbing her reddened face with a tissue. She closed her eyes tight, tears still rolling down her face, when Goldstein played a tape recording of a giddy Blagojevich calling his younger daughter, who is now 8, and putting on a high baby-like voice, saying "Hey Annie!"

A second defense attorney told the judge that Illinois history of political corruption shouldn't count against Blagojevich. Carolyn Gurland said it would be unfair to Blagojevich for Zagel to impose a tougher sentence because other Illinois politicians, including former Gov. George Ryan and U.S. Rep. Dan Rostenkowski, have been sent to prison for corruption.

"The law is clear that he should not be punished because of the history of corruption in Illinois," she said.

If Blagojevich gets the 15 to 20 years in prison, she said, he would become the most severely punished public official in state history.

Prosecutors say the twice-elected governor not only shirked all responsibility for his crimes but repeatedly thumbed his nose at the U.S. justice system. Blagojevich's attorneys have said he has already paid a price in public ridicule and financial ruin, and propose a term of just a few years.

Gurland also argued that Zagel should take into account the fact that Blagojevich did not "receive a single penny" in ill-gotten gains, unlike other politicians convicted of public corruption.

"Rod Blagojevich received nothing," she said, adding that Blagojevich was doing what politicians do by seeking campaign contributions and not "money stuffed into envelopes."

Blagojevich and his wife knew they were setting themselves up for ridicule by appearing on reality television shows, she said, but they did so to provide for their children. Blagojevich appeared on "Celebrity Apprentice," where he struggled to use a cellphone, and his wife ate a tarantula on the reality show, "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!"

Blagojevich's sentencing comes just days before his 55th birthday and three years to the week of his Dec. 9, 2008, arrest. The jury deadlocked in his first trial, agreeing on just one of 24 counts – that Blagojevich lied to the FBI. Jurors at his retrial convicted him on 17 of 20 counts, including bribery.

Among the court attendees Tuesday were more than a dozen jurors from both of Blagojevich's trials, including both foremen.

After sentencing, Zagel will likely give Blagojevich weeks before he must report to prison. Once there, the man heard scoffing on FBI wiretaps about earning a low six-figure salary would have to take a prison job – possibly scrubbing toilets – at just 12 cents an hour.

Make no mistake, in the initial part of the game I was a little bit concerned with what was going on back there in the defensive department, especially on the wings as both Laurent Koscielny and Andre Santos made mistakes that other teams would have maybe punished us for but after we settled down it was smooth sailing as we registered our eight win in the Premier League and move up to 5th in the table.

A driver of a U-Haul truck carrying beer kegs through a tailgating area before the Yale-Harvard game Saturday suddenly accelerated, fatally striking a 30-year-old Massachusetts woman and injuring two other women, police said.

It's not clear why the driver sped up, New Haven Police spokesman David Hartman said. The truck then crashed into other U-Haul vans in the lot, an open playing field used for pre-game tailgating parties before Yale home games in New Haven.

Tim Walker of Pawtucket, R.I., said he was grilling sirloin tips when he heard the crash behind him. He turned and saw two people lying on the ground.

People huddled around them trying to help, according to a video that appears to have been recorded shortly after the accident and posted online. "We're not getting a pulse," said someone crouched near one victim, while the cameraman notes the ambulance hasn't arrived.

After emergency officials arrived, Walker said, he saw one victim being given CPR as she was taken away.

"The driver looked shocked. Absolutely shocked," Walker said. Police have not said whether alcohol was a factor.

"He didn't look intoxicated or anything like that," Walker added. "He had a dazed look like he had just hit someone."

Hartman said the driver was in police custody.

Well, Marquez and his trainer, Nacho Beristain, believe they have the answer. As a result, tonight we will learn whether bigger is better, tougher, meaner or just plain slower. Before the 45th annual Country Music Association (CMA) Awards came to and end, Taylor Swift was invited to the stage of the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee to collect Entertainer of the Year. This victory saved her from walking home empty handed after she was repeatedly blocked from zwinning 2011 Country Music Awards earlier that night.

Underwood and Brad Paisley, in addition to hosting the awards, also performed their hit song "Remind Me" -- and we have to say, it wasn't Underwood's finest moment. She struggled a little bit with some of the higher notes and generally wasn't the super-polished performer we now expect her to be.

Granted, she had a lot on her plate Wednesday, and we can probably chalk it up to being a little bobble in a hectic night. But her part of "Remind Me" sounded just a little off.

McCreery took the stage a short time later to perform "Walk in the Country" from his debut album "Clear As Day." It's not a super-challenging vocal, but he handled the big stage -- in front of what are no doubt some of his musical idols -- pretty well.Lionel Richie singing "Dancing on the Ceiling" with the Rascal Flatts gang, whose guitarists made it rock like they'd been raised on Bachman-Turner Overdrive, was nothing fans of any type of music should be made to sit through.

And Darius Rucker oversinging "Stuck On You" in that same medley by the night's least-country entertainer wasn't any better.

A small jet carrying the owner of NASCAR's top team and his wife lost its brakes and crash landed at a Key West, Florida airport Monday evening, but no one was seriously injured.

Authorities said the Gulfstream 150 aircraft carrying Rick and Linda Hendrick ran off the runway at the Key West International Airport Monday at 7:45 p.m. The Hendricks, a pilot and co-pilot were all taken to Lower Keys Medical Centers. Two suffered minor injuries, though it was not clear who. Two others onboard were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The plane is registered to Jimmie Johnson Racing II Incorporated in Charlotte, North Carolina. Johnson is a five-time defending NASCAR champion and drives for Hendrick Motorsports.

Hendrick owns the race team. Besides Johnson, he also fields cars for four-time champion Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Mark Martin.
